Health Programs

Quickly prepare for a job in a growing, high-demand health care profession. Our Medical Specialties courses offer hands-on training and personalized instruction in a variety of health occupations. If you enjoy helping others, then a medical career may be for you!

All instruction is provided by highly qualified and fully credentialed faculty who are professionally dedicated to teaching and student achievement. Classes are held at the New Bern and Havelock campuses as well as off campus locations around the immediate area, including medical facility on-site training opportunities, providing preparatory employment training or upgrading current workers’ medical skills.

Registration Information

Registration and payment are due 3 business days prior to the beginning of class. Mail or bring the registration forms and payment to the New Bern campus Workforce Development office in Brock 114.

Allied Health Club

Workforce Development Health Programs has organized a club to promote awareness of healthcare opportunities and raise funds for student assistance. Club participants may qualify for scholarships/financial assistance.

Activity Director

North Carolina medical residential facilities require recreational activities. Through classroom lecture and scheduled internships, this course teaches documentation, activity requirements and procedural topics to work in a variety of medical facilities.

CPR for BLS (Basic Life Support)

Initial and recertification for medical personnel. This course provides instruction for infant, child and adult CPR and AED certification through American Heart Association which issues a certification card upon completion of the course.

First Aid

This course provides hands-on and testing components for administering first aid to infants, children and adults. American Heart Association certification cards are issued upon completion of the course.

EKG Technician

This hands-on course provides basic training on the circulatory system and cardiology topics enhancing job training to perform EKG examinations. Upon successful completion of the course students may apply for the National EKG certification (link) exam which is proctored at Craven Community College.

Medical Coding and Billing Specialist-Review

This course provides current medical administrative staff with important reviews for the upcoming medical reimbursement changes. Medical coding updates include medical terminology with basic anatomy and physiology review.

Medical Terminology

This course provides basic medical terminology for job opportunities in the health field.

Medication Aide

This course is a 24-hour NC Board of Nursing approved medication aide training program to prepare students for the NC Medication Aide exam to be listed on the NC Medication Aide Registry.

Nurse Aide - Basic

This course provides direct patient care training via classroom, labs and simulated skill testing to prepare students to provide personal patient care and assistance in a variety of medical settings. NC Nurse Aide Level I testing information is presented for those who wish to test and list with the NC Nurse Aide Level I Registry.

Nurse Aide – Clinical Skills

This advanced 90-hour course provides direct patient care training in clinical settings supplemented by classroom, labs and simulated skill testing.

Nurse Aide Review

This course will provide a review of skills and knowledge through hands-on practicals and brief theory presentation for nursing assistants who have completed formal NA I training or have had work experience in the medical field.

Nurse Aide II

This course is available either as a hybrid course (seated and online) or seated course to prepare individuals who are certified NC NA I to perform more complex skills through class, labs, and clinicals.

Nurse Aide II Renewal

This course provides those individuals with expired NA II certifications to re-qualify for the NC Nurse Aide II registry. Current NC NA I status is required.

Pharmacy Technician

This course provides basic job training skills to assist pharmacists in a variety of medical practices and prepares students for an optional independent certification exam available upon successful completion of the course. An advanced 3-semester Pharmacy Technology diploma program is also available.

Phlebotomy

This course prepares students in venipuncture and basic lab skills used in a variety of medical settings. Class and clinicals are required components to complete this program. National Phlebotomy Technician certification exam will be available upon successful completion of the course.

Physical Therapy Technician

This program will instruct students in rehabilitation and therapy procedures including specific body systems to obtain work under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist. Class and clinicals are components of this course. An advanced 5-semester Physical Therapist Assistant diploma program is also available.
