EMT - Paramedic Trucks and Marine Helicopter

These courses follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS.

The curriculum for the courses follows the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Standard Curriculum

EMT - Course Descriptions

MEDICAL RESPONDER - INITIAL: EMS3025

This 72-hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. Students are instructed in Basic Life Support skills including the use of AED to assist Emergency Medical Technicians in the field. Skills developed are patient assessment, vital signs, airway management, CPR, splinting and hemorrhage control. This is an entry level course for state certification. Total hours: 72. Registration fee of $175 and $16 liability insurance fee may apply.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - BASIC INITIAL (EMT-B): EMS 3044

This 203-hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. This course is designed to train individuals for a career in Emergency Medical Services. The course outline is regulated by the N.C. Office of Emergency Management. In addition to the 180 hours of classroom work, each participant in this class will be required to participate in32 hours of ride along time with an ambulance service provider in Craven County.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN INTERMEDIATE - INITIAL (EMT-I): EMS 3045

This 256- hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines, which details more advanced airway devices, intravenous lines, AED and some drug therapy, in accordance with local protocols. Total hours: 256 with 160 Didactic, 48 Clinical, and 48 Field Internship hours. Registration fee of $175 and $16 liability insurance fee may apply.

Student Prerequisites: High school diploma or general education development (GED); successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the post-secondary grade level; successful completion of an EMT Basic course; and a current NC EMT certification prior to beginning the Clinical and Field Internship components.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - BASIC TO PARAMEDIC (EMT-P): EMS 3031

This 1076-hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. Specific training areas include administration of eight different IV fluids, advanced airway management, cardiac monitoring including defibrillation, cardioversion, cardiac pacing and the administration of 46 different medications. Total hours: 1,076 with Didactic 436, Clinical 200, and Field Internship 440 hours. Registration fee of $175 and $16 liability insurance fee may apply.

Student Pre/Co-requisites: successful completion of an EMT - Basic course; high school diploma or general education development (GED); successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum at the post-secondary grade level; demonstration of math skills at a minimum at the high school grade level. EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - INTERMEDIATE TO EMT -PARAMEDIC BRIDGE (EMT-P): EMS 3030

This 840-hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. Specific training areas include administration of eight different I.V. fluids, advanced airway management, cardiac monitoring including Defibrillation, Cardioversion, Cardiac Pacing, and the administration of 46 different medications. Total hours: 840 with Didactic 436, Clinical 152, and Field Internship 252 hours. Registration fee of $175 and $16 liability insurance fee may apply.

Student Prerequisites: High school diploma or general education development (GED); successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum of the post-secondary grade level; demonstration of math skills at a minimum of the high school grade level; successful completion of an EMT - Basic and EMT - Intermediate course. Certification as an EMT - Intermediate is required prior to beginning the clinical or field internship component of this course. EMS 3000 Anatomy and Physiology course.

PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT (PALS): EMS 3046

The PALS course is designed to certify Emergency Medical Personnel in Pediatric Advanced Life Support through the American Heart Association. This course teaches the proper evaluation and treatment of a pediatric patient in cardiopulmonary arrest. Upon successful completion, the student will be awarded PALS certification from the American Heart Association.

ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT (ACLS): EMS 3048

The ACLS course is designed to certify Emergency Medical Personnel in Advanced Cardiac Life Support through the American Heart Association. It provides physicians, nurses, paramedics, and other health care providers with the information concerning advanced management of the cardiac patient.

Some of the hours for these courses may be increased due to the size of class.


MEDICAL RESPONDER – MR REFRESHER: EMS3066

This 60-hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. The course outline is regulated by the N.C. Office of Emergency Management. Class room participation to include all topics required for recertification. Technical Scope of Practice and Written exam with be required to complete the course.

Student Prerequisites: Current Medical Responder Certification required. High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - BASIC REFRESHER (EMT-B): EMS 3075

This 72 hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. The course outline is regulated by the N.C. Office of Emergency Management. Class room participation to include all topics required for recertification. Technical Scope of Practice and Written exam with be required to complete the course.

Student Prerequisites: Current EMT-B Certification. High school diploma or general education development (GED)

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN INTERMEDIATE –INTERMEDIATE REFRESHER (EMT-I): EMS 3067

This 86 hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines, The course outline is regulated by the N.C. Office of Emergency Management. Class room participation to include all topics required for recertification. Technical Scope of Practice and Written exam with be required to complete the course.

Student Prerequisites: Current EMT-I Certification High school diploma or general education development (GED); successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the post-secondary grade level.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – PARAMEDIC REFRESHER (EMT-P): EMS 3077

This 86 hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. The course outline is regulated by the N.C. Office of Emergency Management. ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY FOR EMS: EMS 3000

This 92 hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. The course outline is regulated by the N.C. Office of Emergency Management. This course is a prerequisite to the Paramedic program. This course provides a basic study of the structure and function of the human body.

This 200-hour program was developed in accordance with the NCOEMS policies and guidelines. This course is designed to train individuals for a career in Emergency Medical Services. The course outline is regulated by the N.C. Office of Emergency Management. In addition to the 176 hours of classroom work, each participant in this class will be required to participate in 24 hours of ride along time with an ambulance service provider in Craven County.

PHTLS (Prehospital Trauma Life Support) (NB, HV)

PHTLS is a 16 hour, two day program that improves the quality of trauma care in your area and decrease mortality. The program is based on a Prehospital trauma care philosophy, stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. This may require an approach to the trauma patient that varies from traditional treatment modalities.

AMLS-(Advanced Medical Life Support) (NB, HV)

AMLS is a 16 hour, two-day program that consists of interactive lectures, teaching and evaluation stations. The interactive/case based lectures include the following topics: Altered mental status and neurologic disorders, Respiratory dysfunction, Shock, Chest discomfort, Endocrine, metabolic and environmental disorders, Abdominal discomfort, Infectious disease, and Toxicological emergencies, hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction. Teaching stations follow the associated lectures each day.

BLS for Health Care Providers (AHA) - CPR & AED is scheduled for the last Friday of every month, and other designated dates at Havelock Fire Rescue West End Station.  Pre registration is required.  Once registered please contact the EMS Coordinator for arrangement for books.
