Distance Education

Welcome to the Distance Education program at Craven Community College! We hope these courses help you reach your academic and personal goals.

Distance Education offers excellent educational opportunities to individuals who are self-motivated and have access to the various electronic media necessary for remote learning. An advantage of distance education is that you can attend college on your time, whether it's at 3:00 a.m. or 4:00 p.m. The World Wide Web and VCRs do not sleep!

Online courses offer the same caliber of instruction as found in the traditional classroom setting. Many of the classes use email and online discussion forums to foster productive, meaningful interaction and learning. Some classes are combination courses that employ both the traditional and the distance learning approach.

We offer several approaches to distance learning to meet your needs:

· If you need college credit for a specific college degree or diploma, we offer curriculum distance learning using several electronic methods. Internet delivery, telecourses, videotapes, and programmed instruction, along with email communication provide all of the tools necessary to function and succeed in a remote setting while participating in your courses.

· If you are interested in learning a particular skill, earning continuing education credit, or taking a class for fun, we offer continuing education options for distance learning using many of the same techniques as found in our curriculum courses.

· The Basic Skills distance education program extends instruction to adult learners in their homes.

Curricula include: Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, General Education Development preparedness, and the Adult High School Diploma. GED preparedness is available through correspondence or video. The NovaNET program (accessed through the Internet) provides instruction for Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, GED preparedness, and the Adult High School Diploma.
