It's time for the next group of the finest at Craven Community College to take a walk.

I'm not talking about "THE WALK" to get their diplomas. Graduation time has arrived, time to gather our wonderful instructors and our "2003" graduates for a celebration. This year the guest speaker is going to be Hilda Pinik. Ms. Pinik is the Vice Chairman of Trustees for all colleges. Graduation day is May 9th 2003 at 9:00 a.m. outside building B.
Although graduation is not until May 9th, I couldn't wait to hear what some of our graduates had to say. So I talked with a couple of ladies who will take the walk this month. I had three simple questions about their experience at Craven Community College. Let me tell you that they didn't have one bad thing to say and their answers were amazing! The names of the ladies are Sue Rasmussen-age 49 and Tara Swartzendruber-age 23.

QUESTION 1: What is your most memorable moment of your experience at Craven?

ANSWER:

Sue- First semester- "I hadn't been in school in many years and I was scared to death, but after a while I learned that I had a lot of instructors that helped me through (referring to our developmental instructors)." Sue also said that her instructors taught her to strive for her best. Through the years Sue has come across a lot more instructors who have gone above and beyond the call of being a teacher.

Tara-That she has preformed in every speech festival. She finds the festivals interesting exciting and has benefited her since she leaves us in May for UNC Wilmington to get her bachelors in theater.

QUESTION 2: What are you going to miss most about Craven Community College?

ANSWER:

Sue- Her response to this was she's not going anywhere because she plans to stay on and get an Arts degree. She thanks many of her instructors for inspiring her want to become an art teacher.

Tara- Class with Mr. Cox, He is like a mentor and a second father. He takes pride in all his students and helps them with their talent and helps them overcome their obstacles.

QUESTION 3: What was your favorite class besides art?

ANSWER:

Sue- Drama with Mr. Cox because he taught her how to interact with others.

Tara-History with Mr. Skull, "He made his class very interesting by bringing his own experience into his classroom.

I would like to thank Sue and Tara for letting me interview them and I along with everyone else wish them the best of luck.

Quote of the Month

"A graduation ceremony is an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that `individuality' is the key to success."

—Robert Orben

Family Fun Day a Smashing Success

Craven Community College families of all ages enjoyed the spectacular weather and entertainment of Family Fun Day hosted by Student Council on April 12, 2003.  The day started off with terrific music by DJ Glenn Van Lee.  His musical vibes had the crowd moving to the beat as Gary Shelton entertained the youngsters with an array of magic tricks and balloon animals.  The "splash" of the day was Phi Beta Lambda's dunking booth.  People lined up to take their best shots at entertaining "dunkees" like William Huckaby, Diane Tyndall and Student Council Chairman William Toler.  The most demanded "dunkee" was CCC's President Scott Ralls as hundreds of students/faculty/staff cheered as Dr. Ralls was submerged into the ice-cold water.  Dr. Ralls was quoted as saying, "Is that as cold as it gets?  Bring it on!!" There were also other fun things for the kids including a "Froggy Fling", a ducky pool sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, a basketball shoot-out and a moonwalk for the kids. Hotdogs & hamburgers were provided by Mel & Vel's catering and free drinks

were also available. All in all, it was a great day for the 1st Annual Craven Community College Family Fun Day. A tradition that will hopefully stay with the college forever. A big "Thank You" is extended to everyone who helped out to run the events and especially to those who just came out to have fun. We hope to see you there next year.

Craven Community College expands Nursing Program

The North Carolina Board of Nursing has approved Craven Community College to expand its Associate Degree Nursing program by 44 students starting next month.

According to Scott Ralls, president of Craven Community College, the nursing expansion is a response to priorities indicated by local health care employers, and is the first step in a College emphasis on education and training for health care professionals.

Carolyn Jones, director of healthcare programs at Craven Community College, said this expansion will help meet the local demands for Registered Nurses. "Local healthcare employers like Craven Regional Medical Center are experiencing a shortage of nurses," said Jones.

"Because the College's nursing program has been limited to 100 students, we have not been able to completely fill the needs of the local workforce," Jones said. "Since the College has always had more applicants than the program could accommodate, there is no shortage of qualified applicants to fill these additional slots."

Rosanne Leahy, vice president of nursing services

at Craven Regional Medical Center, noted, "In light of the impending shortage of nurses, Craven Regional Medical Center welcomes the excellent news of the expansion of the nursing program at Craven Community College. We appreciate the responsiveness of the community college to our needs and have been happy to support their efforts through the funding of nursing scholarship and loans."

The nursing profession as a whole is experiencing a shortage. According to the American Hospital Association Commission on Workforce for Hospitals and Health Systems, hospitals are facing a threatening long-term shortage of nurses, due in part to the aging nursing workforce. The average age of nurses today is 43. The Association added that the declining growth of the U.S. workforce as a whole also contributes to the shortage, with fewer potential workers coming behind the aging baby boomer generation.

For more information about the Associate Degree Nursing program at Craven Community College, contact Carolyn Jones at 638-7342.

Craven Celebrates Founders' Day

Craven Community College celebrated Founders' Day

on Wednesday, April 30, 2003. April 23, 2003 marked the thirty-fifth anniversary of the College. The first campus building, commonly known as Bldg. B, was named after Craven's first president, Dr. Thurman E. Brock.

Beginning in 1963, Craven Community College offered a small network of evening classes in conjunction with Lenoir Industrial Center in Kinston, now known as Lenoir Community College.
Craven Community College administrative offices and classrooms were originally located in St. Luke's Hospital and the Harvey Mansion in downtown New Bern. In 1967, Craven County voters approved a $5.5 million bond referendum that included $500,000 for capital construction to build an independent technical institute in Craven County.

Craven County Technical Institute officially became an independent institution with its first Board of Trustees meeting on April 23, 1968. Charter members of

the Board of Trustees were: Mr. Edwin J. Cella, Mr. Edward C. Howard, Mr. James B. Wiggins, Mr. Hiram Mayo, Mr. John R. Hill, Mrs. Leah O. Ipock, Mr. Charles T. Denham, Dr. Charles T. Barker, Mr. Albert Salem, Mr. James F. Gavin, Mrs. Evelyn C. Haire, and Mr. Lynn N. Kelso.

The College employed three full-time staff members including Dr. Thurman E. Brock as president, Dr. Steve Redd as dean, and Mrs. Hazel Heath as secretary. The College purchased 100 acres of property off of what is now the site of the Craven Community College New Bern campus, off of Glenburnie Road. The first building on the new campus was completed in 1971.

The College now has seven buildings on the New Bern campus. Three additional buildings are nearing completion in Havelock. New Havelock campus facilities include the Institute of Aeronautical Technology, a general classroom building, and a library. The campus is scheduled to open this fall.

CCC Staff-Couple Proud Parents

Hat Day @ the Library

On Monday evening, April 14, 2003 the initiation ceremonies for the Spring, 2003 session of Phi Kappa Phi, the Honor Society at ECU were held.

The son of part-time instructor Warren Nye and Librarian Nancy Nye. Edward M. Nye, was among the Seniors included in this honor. Ed is an English Education major with a minor in ESL(English as a Second Language) Education. Ed's experience as a volunteer assistant in CCC's ESL classes for about 3 semesters was influential in his decision to get his degree at East Carolina.

I want to thank all the instructors and students who contributed to a successful Fine-Free Week during National Library Week(April 7-11); highlighted by the 24th annual celebration of Hat Day @ the Library on April 9th. In spite of the week-long rainy weather, we did have some people who bravely made or wore hats for

the occasion. We had some nice prizes donated by the CCC Foundation. Both Dr. Ralls and Martha Williams(Art instructor) wore hats. Erma Starkey won first place (prize was a very nice pen and pencil set), Mrs. Williams won

Easter Egg Hunt a Huge Success

second place (a very appropriate Foundation umbrella) with her very elegant black and white creation and Gery Boucher, with his purple and gold jester's hat was awarded third (a very professional-looking note paper binder). A good time was had by all; hope to see more of you next year @ the Library!

Craven Students Honored at State Level

The Business & Marketing Club would like to thank all of those who came out to participate in the Egg Hunt on Friday, April 18th. With three sections divided by age groups, the "Hunt" started at 1 p.m. and was over in 2 minutes!! Other activites included a water balloon toss and an egg toss. A big "Thank You" goes out to Ms. Sherry Forrest and her Early Childhood students for helping to set up and give out snacks to the kids, and to K & R Hotdogs for giving us extra drinks when we ran out.

Congratulations to Craven Community College students, Debra Gilo Anderson and Lawrence Williams, who were honored at the Annual North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Awards Luncheon in Raleigh earlier this month. Debra and Lawrence were among 118 North Carolina community college students recognized for academic success and leadership ability.

Debra has served as a CCC Ambassador this year. A 20-year Navy veteran, Debra will graduate this May with an Associate Degree in nursing. This summer, Debra will begin her nursing career at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. She also plans to continue her health care education through the master's degree level.

Lawrence will graduate this May with an Associate degree in Applied Science, Business Administration: Marketing & Retailing. Lawrence is vice president of the Student Council; treasurer of the Forensics Society; and former secretary of the Business and Marketing Club. In addition, he is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Phi Beta Lambda.

The masses gather for instructions.

The Easter Bunny formerly known as Philemon serves up the snacks.

Will Tyndall points out that "the yolk's on him!"

This toddler looks for the last few eggs.

I wonder if anybody sees this one?

"Hotdogs anyone?"

A special friend of the Forensic Society visited our campus recently.

John Kearns, an aspiring director from Wilmington and Morehead City, spoke to Kerry Cox's drama and speech classes in April. Kearns showed the groups a promotional trailer for his proposed tv series, "Life-N-General."

At the time of his presentation, Kearns' production partner, David Schifter from AMVF Productions, was pitching the series to network executives in Los Angeles. Kearns stated that CBS, NBC and ABC had already viewed the trailer and that PAX and the WB network were possible venues for the show. The Forensic Society of Craven Community College has worked with Kearns during two earlier video projects and wishes "Life-N-General," Kearns Entertainment and AMVF Productions every success in their endeavors.

On April 11, 2003, the Forensic Society presented "Honey, Bring Me Some Sweet Tea-I Feel Like Something Southern." The program opened up with eight-year old Shawn Blazer at the piano. Shawn, a student of Joya Barnett, recieved a standing ovation. Other students recieving standing ovations were Mayline Outlaw, who sang "Amazing Grace," and Joya Barnett and Kim Lumpkin who performed "Dream Chaser"(an original piece written by Joya) on piano and cello. The program was full of talent, talent, and more talent. Students from Mr. Cox's Speech and Drama classes performed historical speeches, selections from Spoon River, as well as humerous sketches. Although the program lasted nearly two hours, with two intermissions, there was never a dull moment. Everyone involved deserves special recognition for all of their hard work, especially Mr. Cox who has an eye for spotting talent in students.

Business & Marketing Club Changes Plans

The CCC Business & Marketing Club has decided to not go to Toronto this May. Instead, the club has decided to go to Ottowa. Due to the recent outbreak of SARS, the club settled on still going to Canada, just not Toronto. The Bus/Mkt Club would like to thank K & R Hot Dogs and everyone on and off campus who bought food and shirts, and those who played in and attended the Student Faculty Basketball games to support the trip. This will be the last trip of the Business & Marketing Club, for the club will be dissolving into Phi Beta Lambda this summer.

"Cell Phones and Sticky Notes"

When I woke up this morning and

Sat down to my meal of oats.

I was reminded slightly,

Get your cell phone and stop to get sticky notes.

I dressed and grabbed an umbrella,

My purse and winter coat.

All the while chanting

"cell phone, cell phone. Sticky notes, sticky notes.

As I was walking out the door

I got a call from my lovely folks.

"Ma, I can't talk now.

I have to grab my cell phone and stop to pick up sticky notes.

10 minutes early, I sit in morning traffic

the thing I just love the most.

What!? It can't be. I forgot my cell phone

And might not have time for sticky notes.

Should I u-turn in traffic that moves

Slower than tug boats?

Or risk a horrendous day with

no cell phone…no sticky notes?

Well, I want my cell phone and

I need my stickies for quotes.

I just can't go all day without

my cell phone or my lovely sticky notes.

Now, I'm usually a pretty calm person

But this has been a crappy day and it just started.

It's glooming and raining

Everything is getting soaked.

I'm running low on time, gas and patience.

I need to get my cell phone

And those doggoned sticky notes.

Then suddenly, a ray of sun shines

As through a cloud it pokes.

How is it that I'm sitting at my desk

Staring at my cell phone and a stack of sticky notes.

Oh, Thank Heaven! It was a dream

In the form of a terrible joke.

I hadn't had the worst day ever

I had my cell phone

And my precious sticky notes!!

Glad I'm done

Rest for a while

Able to sleep in

Done with homework

Under pressure, no longer

Anyone calls, I'm not here

Times and friends remembered

Eager to start over

Alumni Association Activities

Update: The first of two Habitat for Humanity/CCC Alumni Association collaborations had a successful turnout on Saturday, March 29. While the day started out cloudy with showers, the volunteers came out anyhow—and so did the sun—to help hang doors, build steps, install windows and worked on a roof. While on patrol, members of New Bern's Finest came by and provided bottled water and ice for the hard working volunteers. "I believe the most exciting part of the event was when the soon-to-be homeowner came out and began working in her yard and talked excitedly about what would be her favorite room and shared ideas for her new home," said Coordinator, Velda Whitfield. The Alumni Association also volunteered to work with Habitat for Humanity of New Bern on Saturday, April 26, 2003. In recognition of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 28-May 2, 2003, Habitat for Humanity awarded the Alumni Association a Certificate of Appreciation for their support and participation on the projects for which we provided assistance. So thanks to all the students and staff who

volunteered.

The Alumni Association is now selling local business discount cards for $5.00. These cards will pay for themselves in no time and are valid for one year. They also make great gifts! Get great discounts at many of your favorite restaurants (i.e., Flounders, Pizza Hut, KFC), Gold's Gym, The Strike Zone, Office Solutions, etc. Help support our local businesses and the CCC Alumni Association. Cards may be purchased from any Alumni member or you may contact Velda Whitfield at 252-638-7320 to obtain cards.

WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE

(A Craven Farewell)

by Joya Barnett

Some people come in and out of your life and you never give them a second thought. Some come in and, regretfully, out and leave imprints that will last a lifetime… or something like that. Years ago I read something close to this. I never thought that I would ever use it but I can honestly say I know what it means now. I am finally "outta here!" However, I say this with the most bitter-sweetness one could have. Let me do some `splainin…

I've been here a while (ha ha). My first few years here were as tough as it would be for any shy, quiet teenager right out of high school. But it took me a little longer to adjust to a new atmosphere and figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. I remember sitting in a General Psychology class watching people get up to sharpen pencils and go to the bathroomwithout raising their hands. GASP!! I was shocked and amazed. I fooled around and wasted some time before deciding I wanted to teach music. At first I didn't take it as serious as it is and wasted some more time. But the past 1-2 years have been the best years of my life. I'm not so sure anymore that what I did was "waist" time. Maybe, just maybe, I wasn't supposed to leave this place then. Whenever I thought it was time, I'd get ready to leave and something would happen to keep me from going. Every time I said, "OK, let's go! Point me in the right direction and I'll take off", it seemed like God said "Hold-up baby girlnot just yet". I cried my eyes out, then. But now I know that what I needed was not someone to show or tell me where to go. I needed to find my own direction.

I've sat back and thought about all the wonderful people I've met and the opportunities I've hadjust within the past year. Sometimes God closes a window just to open a door. It's a bigger, better breeze that way. There's so much I didn't know then. Don't get me wrong. I still don't have it all figured out just yet. But I know a whole lot more. I've grown SO much more. And so much of it is because of Craven Community College. I can't imagine what my life would've been like had I gone to a four year college right after high school. I used to think something was wrong with me because all of my friends went off to college and made it work. Little did I know what was in store for me…

April 30 was Founder's Day here at Craven. We renamed the building everyone knew as just the "B" building to the "Brock Administration" building. During the ceremony Dr. Scott Ralls quoted something that made me realize that, in so many ways, I have taken CCC, it's faculty, staff and students for granted. What he quoted was this: "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." He also said that Craven Community College's goal was to bring people from where they are and take them as far as they can go. CCC has taken me from a little girl to a woman named Joya that has had her life enriched in the most significant way possible. I am so grateful. It's really wonderful to have people that support you, stand behind you and push you towards your goals, who make it so much easier to be a dream chaser. It's the greatest feeling in the world to know they believe in you even when people who are supposed to don't. Especially when those people can sometimes include yourself.

So, here I am now, just days before graduation. I am forever indebted to all those who pushed me to be what I truly am; who have taken me as far as I can go at CCC. It's time to shove off to newer things. I just can't honestly say better things at this point. I talked to a lady the other day from Raleigh, NC who is helping with the graduation ceremony on Friday. Among several other questions she asked me what took so long. Thinking about that and whether or not I regret it is partly what prompted me to write this. If there's anyone who just so happens to be wondering if I think I should have changed mind and gone on with life a long time ago, I say this: I don't regret it for a minute! This has been my life. It's what's shaped my life into what it is now and I wouldn't change it for the world…

And so, the time is now. Push has come to shove. But if this is what it feels likeBring it on, baby! BRING IT ON!!!!!!

Picture Contest

Congratulations to Jenny Bramble for winning last month's picture contest. Just in case you don't remember, we wanted everyone to send in their answers for "What is Jim looking at?" Jenny's reply was:

"Jim's looking at aliens. The students called them in because it was our only hope of winning the game. Obviously, aliens aren't any better at volleyball than we are."

This month, we're going back to our original format...

Who is this?

Jason Smith, part-time CCC art instructor, invites you to attend the opening reception for his art show on Friday, May 9, 2003, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Craven Arts Council, 317 Craven Street. Jason's work will be on exhibit May 9 - May 23 at the Arts Council.

FYI - As most of you know, sign up sheets for any activities, such as intramurals/club activities, etc, are located here on my desk.

Because we do have so many sign up sheets, I have decided to consolidate all those sheets into one notebook which will be placed on the table across from my desk. If you have any events coming up, please place the sign up sheet in the notebook and let me know what you are

This should be fairly easy. Even though the picture is small, everyone should know who this is. If the "Catcher in the...Grass" is correctly identified, you could win something from Gery's Prize Drawer. Just write the name on a small piece of paper, along with your name/phone #/email address, and drop it in the "Communicator Pickle Jar" located in Student Services next to the gumball machine. This time I'd like to see more than on strip of paper in the jar.

putting in there. Also, it would be most helpful if you would include the dates of the event as well as the deadline for sign up on the sheets so that anyone who signs up will know (in case they forgot the dates or didn't read the Campus Communicator).
