The Lifetime Learning CenterExplore Jefferson's Monticello, Madison's Montpelier,
Prince Michel Vineyards and the retreat at Poplar Forest
Wednesday to Friday, April 24-26
Trip DescriptionThis spring, join the Lifetime Learning Center as we depart on a three-day adventure seeking history, architecture, gardens and culinary delights on a tour through the rolling hills of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Highlights of our tour include the historic city of Charlottesville, Jefferson’s estate at Monticello, James and Dolly Madison’s recently renovated and restored estate at Montpelier, Prince Michel Winery and Vineyards, and Jefferson’s retreat at Poplar Forest.
The trip departs on April 24 and returns late on April 26, with a two-night stay in the heart of historic Charlottesville at the Omni Hotel.
We’ll experience lunch and a tour at the famous Michie Tavern, a guided tour at Monticello, followed by a visit to Charlottesville Mall, one of the longest outdoor malls in the nation, filled with art galleries, restaurants, book shops and a variety of civic attractions. As our hotel is located on the mall, participants will have multiple opportunities throughout the weekend to explore the area.
Day Two will begin at Montpelier. We’ll tour the new visitor center, the Madison mansion, exhibits, gardens and a freedman’s cabin and farm. We’ll learn more about James Madison, the “Father of the Constitution,” and his wife, Dolly, the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.”
For those with a taste for the grape, we won’t disappoint! Day Two will also include a gourmet luncheon and a visit to one of Virginia’s finest wineries. Our tour will include the wine-making process and an opportunity to taste these distinctive wines. Day Three will feature a relaxing morning on your own in downtown Charlottesville, followed by an afternoon visit to Jefferson’s personal retreat at Poplar Forest.

FEATURED WINERY VISIT
Prince Michel Vineyard & Winery30 Years of Wine Making Excellence!
This year, 2012, Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery celebrates its 30th anniversary. Jean and Sylvian LeDucq came to Madison, Virginia three decades ago and fell in love with its natural beauty and close resemblance to their beloved France. It was through their vision and appreciation for great wine that Prince Michel came in to being. At that time, winemaking in Virginia was in its infancy with only a few pioneers in the industry. Today, Virginia can boast a staggering 200-plus wineries and thousands of acres of grape vines planted and producing internationally award-winning wines. Throughout this evolution, Prince Michel has stood as the pinnacle of excellent wine and uncompromised quality. Prince Michel was and remains one of the most respected wineries in Virginia.
Our group will have a catered lunch at the winery and then enjoy a full tour of the facilities and a wine tasting with notes of interest provided by Prince Michel staff.
