The Adult Enrichment Program offers self-supporting classes. Here’s your key to interpreting the Summer 2010 Schedule:

All courses in Adult Enrichment are “self-supporting” and opened to all adults. No participant is exempt from payment of the registration fee for these programs. Some self-supporting courses require a supply fee; these fees are included within the tuition fees when noted. Other supplies are to be provided by student.

IMPORTANT: Each course requires a minimum number of students to enroll before it can be offered. If this number is not reached, the class will be canceled. The minimum number of students required is included in parentheses with each class listing.

*Pre-pay
A number of self-supporting programs are designated with an asterisk and are labeled “*Pre-pay.” Participants in these programs must register and pay for the program a minimum of five days in advance of the start date. Some programs will list a registration deadline date.

ARTS & APPRECIATION
Art of Colored Pencils-NB
This drawing class emphasizes the basic techniques of using colored pencils including shading and color layering. (Minimum of five)

Drawing I-NB           
Designed for first-time drawing students, this class teaches participants how to improve their sketches. This class is for the absolute beginner to the pro who wants to improve basic skills. No class July 5. (Minimum of seven)

Oil Painting-NB
In this course, an instructor will cover all the basic foundations needed to learn oil painting techniques. Each lesson will cover a specific topic in oil painting with a high degree of detail. Individual style is encouraged. First class will meet for one hour to register and go over supply needs. No class July 7. (Minimum of eight)

*Pottery-Hand Build and Wheel-NB                                  *Pre-pay         *NEW!
This course is an introduction to creating pottery. The classroom experience will be divided between hand building method and wheel method. The core outcome of the class will be for students to complete the pottery process including glazing and firing. Participants can take advantage two days each week in the studio to maximize experience. Pottery clay and glaze are included in fees; students will need to purchase a set of basic pottery tools for personal use. Class size is limited. (Minimum of eight)

Watercolor-NB
The most important lessons for watercolorists are those that focus on the basic techniques. This class will take you through those basic steps. The first class will meet for one hour for registration, supply list review and project discussion. Space is limited. No class July 6. (Minimum of nine)

           
Watercolor Intermediate/Advanced-NB
This class is for the student who has watercolor experience. Learn to incorporate more detail into your paintings. Space is limited. No class July 6. (Minimum of nine)

COMPUTER SKILLS AND TECHNOLOGY
Computers I for Seniors-NB & HV
This is a course for those who need a comprehensive class on computer use. Students will be continually introduced to essential computer terminology and core software applications. Hands-on usage of computers is emphasized throughout class. No class July 6 or July 8. (Minimum of eight)

CRAFTS AND NEEDLEWORK

*Basket Weaving (Americana Mail Basket)-NB *Pre-pay*NEW!
This is multi-level class teaching an Americana-style wall basket. Students will need bring their basket tools and furnish their spokes, weavers, rims and lasher. Other supplies will be included: handle, dyed reed and embellishment. Students need to bring a lunch or plan on taking a lunch break. (Minimum of five)

Floral Arranging/Live Flowers-NB
Learn different designs throughout this class. An experienced floral designer will teach a wide variety of arrangements. The flowers, most greenery, foam, some containers, ribbon, wires and tape will be furnished. At the first class, the teacher will discuss remaining supplies that will be needed. (Minimum of eight)

Fused Glass-Sea Life Themes-NB
This course will cover the fused glass process from beginning to end and is geared to serve as a starting point for those new to the craft. During this class, students will create fused glass sun catchers or ornaments that have a sea life theme. The class will also cover basic studio safety, glass cutting and an extensive overview of the fusing process. Students will create two or three pieces (number depends on piece size.) Glass supplies include in fee.  (Minimum of eight)

Knitting-NB
Our knitting classes are multi-leveled, but great for beginners looking for the very basics. The class will include tips and techniques for choosing yarn and patterns. Some of the projects being made are socks, scarves, shawls, sweaters and bags. No class on July 5.  (Minimum of eight)

Quilting-NB & HV                *NEW!
This class is for new beginners and those that started a quilting project and need assistance in completing it. Hand sewers or machine sewers are welcomed. No class on June 28 and July 5. (Minimum of seven)

Sewing-(Learn to Sew)-NB & HV
This is a basic beginner’s sewing class. Tips for selecting a sewing machine, techniques from threading a needle, sewing in a zipper, hems and mending to following a pattern and competing several finished projects. A limited number of sewing machines are available for the New Bern Campus only. No class on June 28 and July 5. (Minimum of seven)

CULINARY ARTS
Cake Decorating-NB & HV
This is a beginner’s course in cake decorating for the home. Students will be taught how to frost cakes, make borders, write on cakes, design frosting roses and more. First class will meet for one hour to register and to go over the supply list. No class July 5. (Minimum of eight)

DANCE AND EXERCISE
Dance-Traditional Ballroom-NB
Students will be comfortable in performing major dances, such as Foxtrot, Waltz and Tango on a beginner level in any social atmosphere after participating in this class. The class will focus on proper technique and frame as well as execution. Ballroom is a great way to increase fitness levels and coordination while having fun! (Minimum of eight)

Start-to-finish golf swing instruction in eight days
This hands-on, concentrated class will help beginning golfers with essential techniques. You will be instructed in each of the following techniques to make you a better golfer: grip, stance and posture, footwork, backswing, transition, forward swing, impact and follow through. Time also will be spent on rules, equipment and course etiquette. Academy T-shirt and last day luncheon included in registration.

Yoga (Stretch for Flexibility)-NB
This course teaches students how to gain more flexibility in the joints, it enables students the ability to relax more completely and affords a greater sense of wellness. (10 weeks) (Minimum of 10) No class July 2.

FUN AND GAMES
Bridge-Beginners-NB
This eight-week class is for those who have never played bridge. Students will be taught the basic bidding and card play techniques to be able to play a relaxed evening of social bridge. No class July 6. (Minimum of 10)

Bridge-Intermediate-NB
Review of the basics (the bidding, defense and declarer play.) This six-week class is for those who need to refresh their game. (Minimum of 10)

Bridge-Advanced-NB
Introduction to the “Two Over One Forcing” bidding system, with some advanced play and defense topics. Six-week class. (Minimum of 10)

GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE
Landscape Design-NB
Have you seen landscape designs on television and envisioned creating your own landscape design for your home or business? If the answer is yes, then this course is for you! Students will be walked through a step-by-step process to design and organize their particular sites from trees, plants and flowers to water features, entertainment areas, walls and trellises. (Minimum of seven)

HISTORY, HUMANITIES and TRAVEL
Creative Writing-NB                        *NEW!
Try your hands at various forms of creative writing including plays, screenplays, short stories and poetry, including structured forms and free verse. You will look at certain aspects of creative writing including symbolism, character development and theme. This should be a good class to help you sample different styles and find your creative voice. (Minimum of eight)

Introduction to Acting- NB                          *NEW!
Improve your thespian muscles in this introduction to acting class. We will study acting styles and do classroom projects that will include working with scenes, monologues and improvisation. We will focus on interpretation, delivery and stage movement. You will be expected to rehearse for class projects outside of the classroom. (Minimum of eight)

Novel Writing-NB
If you love to write or dream of writing, consider this class a great opportunity. This class will introduce the elements of novel writing, covering such topics as character, staging, scene and plot, among others. (Minimum of eight)

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY
*Motorcycle Safety-Basic Rider Course-NB *Pre-pay
This three-day motorcycle safety course is designed for beginning riders and for re-entry riders who have not ridden in a long time. Successful completion of the course will earn you a skills waiver card for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, which means the DMV will not require you to take its motorcycle riding test. You will still be required to visit your local DMV office and take a written exam before being issued a motorcycle endorsement. The college provides the motorcycles. Each session is limited to 10 enrollments, so early registration is recommended. (Minimum of 10)

MUSIC AND APPRECIATION
A Musical Journey: Romanticism in Music-NB *NEW!
Whether you are a casual listener or a serious student, this class will introduce you to the Romantic Period. Join us to study musicians such as: Schubert, Chopin, Strauss and more.

Bluegrass Banjo-Beginner-NB
This is a hands-on class in learning how to play the banjo with individual and group practice. No class July 6. (Minimum of seven)

Bluegrass Banjo-Intermediate-NB
This is a hands-on class in playing the banjo. You must have basic knowledge of this instrument. You will be playing individually and in groups. No class July 5. (Minimum of seven)

Guitar-Beginning-NB
Discover the basics of playing the acoustic guitar, from basic cords to understanding scales. (Minimum of seven)

Piano I (Beginning)-NB
This is our basic beginning class in piano. This 10-week class will include technique and learning how to read notes, terms and key signatures. (Minimum of six)

PHOTOGRAPHY
Digital Photography-NB *NEW!
Get the most from your digital camera. Whether you are just beginning to venture into the wonderful world of photography or are an advanced photographer, this eight-week plus a four-hour field trip (Saturday, July 10) is included in which to try out your new skills! Bring your digital camera, manual and sample photos of your work! (Minimum of nine)

Photography-NB
This is a basic photography course using a still or digital camera. Learn how to take better pictures and the basics of camera operation. Enjoy the results of better picture composition. (Minimum of eight)
