How Do I....

Get a Library Card

How do I get a library card?

You can request a library card in person, or you can click here and fill out a library card application online.

How long do my library privileges last?

One year.

How many items can I check out at one time?

Five.

How long can I keep them?

Three weeks. If no one needs the items, you can renew them for an additional three weeks.

Can I renew by phone or e-mail?

Yes.  Just call 252-638-7275 to renew by phone.  Send an e-mail to libraryc@cravencc.edu to renew by e-mail.

What happens if I lose my card?

You can get a replacement card for $1.

I'm not a student or faculty member. Can I get a library card?

Yes, if you are over the age of 18 and are a resident of Craven County.

Get an Interlibrary Loan

What is interlibrary loan?
An interlibrary loan (ILL) is a tool you can use to request books and articles you need that are not available at Craven. The main method of getting this material is through CCLINC.

What is CCLINC?
Community College Libraries in North Carolina (CCLINC) is a partnership of 44 libraries that have access to over one million resources. For more information on CCLINC and on how to use it to request books from other NC community college libraries, click here.

What if I need material that isn't available through CCLINC?
You can fill out an online form (located here) requesting the material and you'll be contacted when it arrives.

How long does it take to get materials?
The time it takes to get materials varies depending on where the material comes from. It's best to make your ILL request as soon as possible in order to get the material in time for your assignment.

How long can I keep books through ILL?
Books obtained through CCLINC can be kept for three weeks. Books obtained outside of CCLINC will vary, according to that library's due date policies.

Is there a cost for this service?
Material requested through CCLINC is free. Libraries outside of CCLINC will often charge for ILL service, and those charges will vary. We will always contact you and get your permission before we order any material that you will have to pay for.

What material is not available through ILL?
Reference books and audio/visual materials are generally not available through ILL.

Do I have to be a student or employee of the college to use ILL?
No. Members of the community are welcome to take advantage of this service.

How do I get my material once it arrives?
You can pick up your material at Godwin Memorial Library. We're on the second floor of Barker Hall (Building A) on the New Bern campus.

I have a question that isn't on this list.
Then please contact our ILL Specialist Michael Edwards at edwardsm@cravencc.edu and he'll be happy to answer it.

Get the NCLIVE Password

How do I get the NCLIVE password?

Visit the library in person and ask for the password, or fill out this form and e-mail it to libraryc@cravencc.edu as an attachment.

Who is eligible for a password?

CCC students, staff, and faculty.  Non-CCC affiliated library users are not allowed access to the password, but can use NCLIVE on-campus.  They can also get the password from the public library.  I know, it makes no sense.  But it's crazy laws and wacky loopholes like these that seperate us from the animals.

Does this password give me access to all of your electronic resources?

Glad you asked!  In addition to the fine resources available through NCLIVE, the library has recently purchased World Cultures Today and World Folklore and Folklife.  These delightful databases have information about all aspects of world culture and religion and will help you with a variety of classes and personal research topics.  These are not available through NCLIVE, so call (252) 638-7272 or e-mail libraryc@cravencc.edu to request the separate passwords.

Pay Library Fines

What's the fine for an overdue item?

Our fines are $.10 per day per overdue book, and $1 per day per overdue video or DVD.

What if I've lost the item?

You will be charged for the price of the item plus a $5 processing fee.

What if I find the item after I've paid for it?

When you pay for the item, you will be given a receipt.  If you find the item within one year after paying for it, and bring in the item AND the receipt, we will refund the cost of the book.  We keep the $5 processing fee as compensation for our emotional trauma.

Remember, if you find the item but lose the receipt, we won't refund your money.  If you find the item more than one year after the fact, we won't refund your money.

Use the Computer Lab

Does your library have Internet access?

Yes. We have a lab with 12 Internet-ready computers.

Do I have to be a student?

No.  Priority is given to students, but members of the public can use the computers as well.

Can I print from these computers?

You can print from the ones in the lab.

Does the library charge for printing?

Yes. Anyone not affiliated with the college is charged $.10 per page. Those affiliated with the college can print for free, provided that they don't abuse the process.  (Generally, printing more than ten pages a day is considered abuse of process, but we take these things on a case by case basis.) All additional pages are $.10 per page. When you are finished printing, bring your payment to the Service Desk.

Why was the printer moved out of the computer lab?

Because some people were abusing the process by printing out paper when they didn't need to, and by printing without paying.  This caused us to go through many print cartridges and reams of paper, which is expensive.  Moving the printer has cut back on this problem considerably.

Can I print in color?

No.  We do not have a color printer, nor are we aware of any place else on campus that does.

What if I'm having problems printing? (i.e., the words are being cut off or the page is printing out blank)

At the first sign of trouble, contact someone at the Service Desk and let them know you're having trouble, and they will troubleshoot for you.

Make Photocopies

Does the library have a photocopier?

Yes. We have a photocopier that can make regular and double-sided photocopies.

Does the library charge for photocopying?

Yes. Copies cost $.10 a page.

What happened to the old self-serve copier?

It died.  We now have a new copier that unfortunately is not self-serve, and is not attached to a coin box.  The library staff is happy to assist you in photocopying, as well as taking your money.  Okay, that last part didn't come out right.

Other FAQ's

Do you have microfilm readers?

Yes, we have two.

Do you have videos or DVDs available for checkout?

The library now has a small (but growing!) collection of educational DVD's for students to checkout.  These include DVD's on foreign culture, website design, job interviews, historical events, hot topics, and several productions of plays and literary works.  There are a handful of popular entertainment choices as well.

We also have instructional videos available for students taking MAT 050, MAT 060, MAT 070, MAT 115, and PSY 150. Some of these are available on DVD as well. We also have a variety of educational videos that are available to instructors only.

Do you allow smoking in the library?

No.

Do you allow eating or drinking in the library?

No. Eating begets crumbs, and crumbs beget bugs, and bugs beget chewed pages in books. Drinking (the non-alcoholic kind) is allowed, as long as the drinks have a top or lid. Canned drinks are not allowed.

Your library looks peaceful and comfy. Do you mind if I take a few winks?

Not at all. But if you snore, please be courteous and sit in the back.

If you have any questions about the library, frequently asked or otherwise, call (252) 638-7272, or e-mail: libraryc@cravencc.edu.  We'll be glad to answer them.
