Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a program of instruction designed for adults who need to improve their reading, writing, speaking, problem solving, or computation skills to function more effectively in society, on a job or in the family.   ABE students function below a high school level. ABE Classes are held both on and off campus and there is no charge to attend.  ABE Class Schedule

Adult High School (AHS)

An adult may earn a NC Adult High School Diploma by completing twenty (20) units and by passing the NC Competency Test in mathematics and reading.   Students may earn credits through the New Bern and Havelock Learning Labs and distance education.  AHS Class Schedule

Compensatory Education (CED)

The compensatory education program is a program specifically designed for adults with intellectual disabilities.  The curriculum covers mathematics, reading, health, social science, and consumer education.  To be eligible for the program, students must be at least seventeen (17) years and older who (a) have been diagnosed as having an intellectual disability; or (b) are pronounced as functioning on a level equivalent of an intellectual disability resulting from head injury or brain damage.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

English as a Second Language is a program designed to help adults who are limited English proficient achieve competence in the English language.  The curriculum covers communicating fluently in English, writing, reading development, and survival skills.   ESL classes are offered during the day and evening based on demand. ESL Class Schedule

General Education Development (GED)

The GED program prepares adults to take the five GED tests required to complete a high school equivalency. Subjects include writing, reading, social studies, science, and math.  The GED is recognized nationally as a legal equivalent of a high school diploma. A GED serves the same purpose as a high school diploma in meeting most job requirements and is accepted in place of a high school diploma at most community colleges and four-year colleges and universities. The North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges awards GED diplomas to students who successfully complete the GED tests.   New Bern and Havelock are official GED testing centers.  The GED test is given throughout each month.  There is a $7.00 test fee.  GED classes are offered day and evening and textbooks are provided for the student use. For more information call Semantha Watkins GED/AHS Coordinator at 638-7364  GED Class Schedule
