This program helps students learn to speak English as their second language. Students receive help in speaking, reading, and writing English.   Students may begin taking ESL classes any time after having an assessment. There is no charge to take these classes. Orientation:  Orientation for the New Bern Campus classes is held on Thursday from 6-9 PM.    Daytime assessment is by appointment.  Please call 638-7265.    Walk-in orientation and assessment are held at the Havelock campus and Hispanic Center.

El programa de ESL es para los estudiantes adultos que la lengua materna no es inglés. La instrucción se con centra en las habilidades de inglés que permitirán a estudiantes obrar recíprocamente con eficacia en la programa.

ESL  for Communication:  Presentation of basic reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills for students whose primary language is other than English.   Extensive practice in reading and comprehending simple short stories, articles, and dialogs and writing related sentences.   Emphasis on high-frequency vocabulary (basic sight words) and phonics; refining oral and written production and listening skills; and increasing control of the English sound system to minimize miscommunications or misperception due to foreign accent.
