Practical Nursing Diploma (D45660)Nursing Program Information
Craven Community College offers both the Associate Degree and Practical Nursing (Diploma) programs.
The Practical Nursing curriculum prepares individuals with the knowledge and skill to provide nursing care to children and adults. Students will participate in assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN), which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation/long term care/home health facilities, clinics and physicians' offices.

Admissions RequirementsADN and PN - Minimum eligibility requirements for the Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing Diploma program are:
- You must have placed into ENG 111 on the placement test or you must have completed all Developmental English. You may have completed an equivalent class at another accredited college/university with a grade of "C" or higher. Have taken the SAT and scored 500 or higher on Written and Oral Communications, have taken the ACT and scored 21 or higher on English.
- Must have tested out of or completed an Introduction to Algebra (MAT 070), placed into MAT 080 or higher on the placement test, or completed a math higher than Math 070 at the college/university level with a grade of "C" or higher. Placement tests at other colleges/universities will be considered if taken within the past three years and meets Craven Community College score standards. SAT score of 500 or higher on Math, ACT score of 21 or higher in Math.
- Must have completed a high school or college/university level chemistry class with a grade of "C" or higher.
- Must have a current GPA of 2.5 or higher. If you have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours at Craven Community College, and have not attended another college/university since completing those hours, we will use Craven's GPA. If you have multiple college transcripts and have not completed a minimum of 12 semester hours at Craven Community College, we will combine all GPA's to determine if you are currently at a 2.5 or higher. If you have less than 12 semester hours of college work, we will use your high school GPA. If you completed a GED and have less than 12 semester hours, you must have scored 2400 or higher on the GED to be considered.
- Must have completed an admissions application for Craven Community College. All Official Transcripts must be submitted with the Nursing Application or received prior to submitting the Nursing application.
Eligible students will then schedule their Nursing Admission Exam (TEAS). Testing will begin in March 2011. The testing schedule will be announced at a later date.
Transition ApplicationsApplications for transition students for the Summer 2011 class will be accepted, beginning January 2011.
- The applicant must be a graduate of an approved Practical Nursing program and hold a current unrestricted license in the state of North Carolina to practice as a Practical Nurse. The applicant must have been employed as an LPN within the past 3 years. The applicant's supervisor or Human Resources Director must mail a letter directly to the College's Admissions Office verifying employment, position held, and phone number where the supervisor or Human Resources Director may be contacted for verification.
- The applicant must have successfully completed all pre-requisites for NUR 120 Nursing II, including non-NUR courses, prior to the first day of class.

Transfer ApplicantsApplications for transfer students into either the ADN or PN program will be accepted on a year-round basis. Students should consult with the Director of Nursing, regarding nursing course transfer credit and Student Services regarding general education course transfer credit. Selection for transfer admission will be based on meeting all admission criteria and is subject to space availability.

After meeting the admissions criteria outlined for nursing and the minimum score on the nursing placement test, students are eligible to earn points based on above-average academic performance. Students will be awarded points, as designated above, for exceptional high school or previous college performance. These points will be added to their overall score on the nursing placement test, which is required for admittance into Craven's nursing programs. Students will be rank-ordered according to their score/number of points and students with the highest scores/number of points will be admitted into the nursing programs as space allows.
