Early Childhood Associate: Special Education
Associated in Applied Science Degree (A5522A)
Program Description:
Special Education is a concentration under the curriculum title of Early Childhood Associate. This curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers.
Course work includes childhood growth and development, physical/nutritional needs of children, care and guidance of children, and communication skills with parents and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children.
Graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs in early childhood settings. Employment opportunities include child development and childcare programs, preschools, public and private schools, recreational centers, Head Start Programs, and school-age programs.

Additional Information: Requirements for select courses are subject to change depending on State of North Carolina agency requirements. Select courses have an attendance requirement mandated by State agencies.
Students earning degrees in both Early Childhood Associate, Early Childhood Associate - Teacher Associate must complete a total of three COE experiences. The final two COE experiences must occur in settings to balance the student's previous experience to assure that the student has experience appropriate both to Early Childhood Teacher Associate and Early Childhood Special Education Associate. In addition, students earning multiple degrees will be required to complete the total number of credit hours mandated by each program. COE experiences are assigned at the discretion of the department director and must occur in state approved registered childcare homes, early childhood programs, public/private schools, or ICF-MR facilities.
