Additional Information: This program is fully approved by the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetology. The Certificate student may leave the program after 1200 contact hours (thre semesters/one year) and successful completion of the minimum required State Board of Cosmetic Art performances for the apprenticeship license. The Apprentice is required to work an additional 960 clock hours (full-time employment of 6 months) under a licensed cosmetologist registered with the State Board as their overseer. After completing the 960-hour apprenticeship training and forwarding appropriate fees to the State Board, the Cosmetologist License is awarded.
Students desiring to have a cosmetologist license in a shorter time and more education and experience at advanced level concepts may opt to complete a fourth semester.
All students are encouraged to sit for the State Board Exam as soon as they have reached the level of apprentice. Generally, the fourth semester schedule is especially designed to free students at 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and all day on Friday and Saturday to allow them to join the "real world" of the professional salon working for compensation by permission of their apprentice license. The fourth semester hours are dedicated to more personalized designing for individual face shapes, more hands-on dimensional coloring techniques and varied texture services to prepare the student for the transition to the business world. Upon completion of the fourth semester, 1500 hours and required performances, the student may send their apprentice license to the Board with appropriate fees and their Cosmetologist license is awarded in one-third the time required to work the full apprenticeship.
The college awards a Diploma for the 1500-hour student who ALSO completes ACA 111, ENG 102, and PSY 101.
Cosmetology is an option in the Step-Ahead program in which, with school and parental permission, high school seniors are allowed to enroll concurrently in college and high school classes. Interested students should contact their high school counselor and the Student Services Division of the College.
