Engineering Premajor (A1040D)

This premajor prepares students for transfer into a university school of engineering.  Degree requirements at engineering schools differ among engineering majors and within the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences areas of the general education core. The academic advisor is the best source for this information.

Craven Community College also maintains a 2+2 engineering program with North Carolina State University (NCSU). Certain students within the 2+2 program will transfer to NCSU before completing the Associate in Science with a Premajor in Engineering degree.  Details of the NCSU 2+2 program are found at 2+2 Engineering.

Associate in Science Degree with a PreMajor in Engineering

Program of Study (65 SHC)

Curriculum Code: A1040D

Academic Skills (1 Semester Hour Credit)

General Education Core (44 Semester Hours Credit)
The general education core includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, the college includes opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and the basic use of computers.

NOTE:  The courses listed for Humanities and Social Science areas in the General Education core meet the requirements of North Carolina State University Engineering programs. Students planning to complete an engineering degree at another university may have other course opinions for these areas. Students should consult their academic advisor for this information.

English Composition (6 SHC)

Humanities/Fine Arts (9 SHC)
Select one course from three discipline areas. One course must be a literature course.  If you do not have high school foreign language credits, see your advisor for recommendations.

Social/Behavioral Sciences (9 SHC)
Select one course from three discipline areas. One course must be a history course.

Natural Sciences (12 SHC)
Three courses are required.

  • Chemistry (CHM 151)
  • Physics (PHY 251* and PHY 252)
*MAT 271 is a prerequisite and MAT 272 is a corequisite

Mathematics (8 SHC)
Two courses are required.

Other Required Hours (20 Semester Hours Credit)

  • Other courses to complete 6-7 SHC
Students in the 2+2 program with NC State will select from the following courses depending on their major field of engineering.  (NCSU course number is in parentheses).  Because these courses are taken through NCSU, there is no link to the course descriptions in the CCC catalog.
  • Electrical/Computer Engineering:  EGR 210-Intro to Elect/Com Lab (ECE 200); EGR 211-Intro to Computer Org (ECE 206); EGR 212-Logic System Design I (ECE 212); EGR 213-Electric Circuits (ECE 211)
  •  Non-Electrical Engineering:  EGR 225-Engineering Dynamics(MAE 208); EGR 228-Intro to Solid Mechanics (MAE 314); EGR 230-Engineering Materials (MSE 200)

Other students should select from the List of Courses Approved for Transfer to meet the 6-7 other hours. Course selection depends on the engineering major selected and the university to which the student plans to transfer. See advisor for assistance.
