Academic Skills (1 Semester Hour Credit)

General Education Core (44 Semester Hours Credit)
The general education core includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core are opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and the basic use of computers.

NOTE:  Students not planning to complete the AS degree before transferring to a UNC-system university should take special care to select courses to match the specific requirements of the receiving institution.  For example, North Carolina State University requires specific Humanities and Social Science courses from the list below to meet General Education requirements in certain programs.  Students should consult their academic advisors for this information.

English Composition (6 SHC)

Humanities/Fine Arts (9 SHC)
Select one course from three discipline areas. One course must be a literature course.  

Social/Behavioral Sciences (9 SHC)
Select one course from three discipline areas. One course must be a history course.

Natural Sciences (12 SHC)

*MAT 271 is a prerequisite and MAT 272 a corequisite.

Mathematics (8 SHC)
