This degree program is designed to transfer into baccalaurate programs for students who wish to complete a Bachelor in Arts (BA) degree with a major in art or music, a Bachelor in Fine Arts (BFA) degree in art or music, or a Bachelor in Music (BM) degree. The degree has three parts: an academic skills course, a 28-semester hour general education core, and 36 semester hours of specialized art or music courses. The AFA degree is also appropriate for persons who want additional training in art or music without the need to pursue a four-year degree.
All courses in the AFA program will transfer to UNC-system schools; however, all UNC-system universities do not have BFA degrees and so may transfer specialized art or music courses as electives. Because the AFA degree contains only 28 semester hours credit for general education courses, AFA students must meet additional general education requirements at the receiving university. See the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for further details of the AFA transferability.Completion of the AFA degree prepares students to compete for admission to BA/BFA in arts or music or BM programs at UNC-system universities. Because the AFA degree does not guarantee admission to a university art or music program, the student's academic advisor is the best source of information on preparing specific portfolios or meeting audition requirements for university program admissions.
