Academic Skills (1 Semester Hour Credit)

General Education Core (44 Semester Hours Credit)
The general education core includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, the college includes opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and the basic use of computers.

English Composition (6 SHC)

Humanities/Fine Arts (12 SHC)
Select four courses from at least three discipline areas. COM 231 is required. One course must be a fine arts course. One course must be a literature course.    The fourth can be from any humanities category.

Social/Behavioral Sciences (12 SHC)
Select four courses from at least three discipline areas. PSY 150 and one sociology class are required.  One course must be a history course.

Natural Sciences (8 SHC)
Select two courses, including accompanying laboratory work, from the biological and physical science disciplines. 

Mathematics (6 SHC)
Select two courses:  

Other Required Hours (20 Semester Hours Credit)
Select 20 SHC from General Education courses (above) and Elective courses that have been approved for transfer.

It is recommended the student select up to 18 shc of courses that will meet a corollary studies area. 

Corollary studies expand and deepen the potential elementary teacher's knowledge, appreciation, and skills in one of four interdisciplinary areas:

  • diversity studies
  • global issues
  • the arts
  • math, science and technology 

This concentration satisfies in part the requirement for the academic concentration required for NC licensure.  Recommended courses in the collorary studies area may be taken as General Education or as Other Required Hours. 

The student's academic advisor has the list of recommended courses for corollaries.

These courses should be selected in conjunction with the requirements of the university to which the student wishes to transfer. 

  • Other recommended courses:
    • 2 or 3 SHC of Health or P.E: HEA 110, PED 110, or 2 PED courses
    • EDU 216 (at certain UNC-system universities, this class will fulfill requirements for the major; at others the course will transfer only as a free elective.
