The Basic Skills Department promotes and teaches foundation courses in reading, writing, mathematics, life skills and Workplace Literacy** to adults. We offer quality assessment, advisement, and innovative, creative instructional resources to our students.
Our programs, accessible on site (New Bern or Havelock campus), off site in various satellite locations, and through Distance Learning (Home Study) allow individuals to complete the Adult High School Diploma; prepare for the General Educational Development test; and improve English-language skills for non-native speakers.
** Workplace Literacy Workplace literacy provides group instruction for business and industry employees. Courses are designed to enhance competencies needed for the workplace. These competencies may include training workers need to gain new employment, retain present jobs, advance in their careers or increase productivity. Curricula are developed by the Basic Skills staff, working with employers and employee groups, who assemble written materials used on the job and who analyze specific jobs to determine what reading, computation, speaking and reasoning skills are required to perform job tasks effectively. Courses are available at Craven Communtiy College or in the workplace.
Workplace Literacy may benefit your organization if your employees:
· Must perform work more than once to meet standards;
· Need to understand pie charts, line graphs, bar graphs, and histograms;
· Need to improve listening, team building and communication skills.
