Adult Basic Education (ABE) - Pre-GED/Pre-High School
General Education Development (GED)

SPRING 2005

Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED) programs offer personalized instruction to improve reading, writing, and math skills. Adults who have not graduated from high school may work toward a GED, while students who have completed high school many take a GED class to refresh their skills.

  • Adult Basic Education - Pre-GED/Pre-High School
Adults who have not graduated from high school and need to work on reading, writing, or math skills up to the eighth grade level may enroll in ABE. Classes are held both on and off campus and there is no charge to attend.
  • General Education Development
The GED program prepares adults to take the five GED tests required to complete a high school equivalency. Subjects include language arts, writing, reading, social studies, science, and math.
  • The GED is recognized nationally as a legal equivalent of a high school diploma. A GED serves the same purpose as a high school diploma in meeting most job requirements and is accepted in place of a high school diploma at most community colleges and four-year colleges and universities. The North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges awards GED diplomas to students who successfully complete the GED tests.

For more information about GED classes, call 252-638-7246 ( New Bern) or 252-444-6117 ( Havelock).
  • Distance Education GED
Classes are available online, through mail correspondence, and video. For more information, call 252-638-1587 ( New Bern) or 252-444-6117 ( Havelock).

Adult High School Diploma
The Adult High School program helps adults complete their high school credits. Adults who need a high school prerequisite to enroll in a college degree program may take AHSD courses to complete those prerequisites. High school graduates who want to take refresher classes are also welcome.

Students may enter the AHSD program at any time after having an assessment. Students may attend class in New Bern, Havelock, or through distance education. There is no fee to take AHSD classes.

Students must pass the North Carolina Competency Test to receive an AHS diploma. AHS graduates receive a high school diploma from Craven County Schools and Craven Community College.
