Economic
Development Connections
North
Carolina’s community colleges are internationally acclaimed
for their role in supporting economic development and the
competitiveness of Tar Heel businesses and industries. The
history dates back to the late 1950s with the creation of
Industrial Education Centers, the forerunners of North Carolina
community colleges. The focus has continued through 40 years,
making North Carolina community colleges the leading system
of workforce development in the world, as described in the
article, “A
North Carolina Tradition.”
Craven
Community College continues this tradition by supporting economic
and workforce development and by collaborating with organizations
that foster business vitality and job growth. One of our closest
partners is the Craven
Economic Development Commission and its support organization,
the Committee of 100. These organizations champion efforts
that broadly support economic development throughout the county.
Craven
County is fortunate to have two very strong chambers, the
New
Bern Area Chamber of Commerce and the Havelock
Chamber of Commerce. Representatives of the College serve
on both boards of directors and are actively involved in all
Chamber events. The programs sponsored by these organizations
not only make Craven County a healthy place to do business,
but also foster leadership development, educational support,
professional networking, and a host of other activities that
sustain our county’s unique quality of life.
With emphases
on community engagement and economic development, Craven Community
College actively collaborates with a variety of other organizations
working to achieve broad-based economic development. These
organizations include the Swiss Bear Downtown Development
Organization and the Uptown Business and Professionals’
Association.
We invite
you to discover how our partnership with these organizations
contributes to economic development in Craven County and how
your participation can increase Craven County’s quality
of life.
