Academic Skills Center

The Math Lab is available for students who are taking mathematics courses at all levels. Tutors are available to work with students in small groups so they can succeed. Tutors might not always be available for one-on-one tutoring. However, students who have visited the MAT Lab and wish to work with a tutor one-on-one should contact the director of the Academic Skills Center to see if accommodations can be made.

STEPS to access the MAT Lab:

1. Ask your instructor to complete a Referral Form for you. Include the difficult topic(s)/concept(s) in which you would like assistance from the ASC staff.
2. Visit the ASC after your instructor has submitted the Referral Form and ask for your ASC Student Card at the Sign In Desk.
3. Go to the MAT Lab tutor for the assistance.
4. Show your ASC Student Card at the Sign In Desk for future visits to the MAT Lab.

The Writing Lab is available to ALL curriculum students who need help with their writing and research skills. Tutors might not always be available for one-on-one assistance. However, students who have visited the writing lab and wish to work with a tutor one-on-one should contact an ASC Coordinator/Manager.

3. Go to the WRT Lab tutor for the assistance.
4. Show your ASC Student Card at the Sign In Desk for future visits to the WRT Lab.

Writing Lab hours vary by semester. Please call 252-638-7274 (NB) or 252-444-0707 (HV) for this semester’s Writing Lab schedule of open hours.

Please check out another one of the Writing Lab services; reviewing your written draft for class assignments. You can send your draft to online submission (via email) for review. Please allow for 48-72 hours for the review/response.

The Computer Lab in the Academic Skills Center offers students access to word processing, Internet research and e-mail. Tutorials and orientations are also available to students.

How to access Smarthinking...

1. You must request your instructor to submit a ASC Client Referral Form to the Academic Skills Center for Smarthinking.
2. The Academic Skills Center (ASC) will contact you with the temporary password and any other details needed to log on once we are in receipt of the referral form.
