Broadcasting since June 4, 1984, Public Radio East is a non-profit, non-commercial public radio station licensed to the Board of Trustees of Craven Community College. It is the mission of Public Radio East, regional public radio, to serve eastern North Carolina by providing information and fine arts programming that challenges and stimulates the curious audiences of the area.

The station broadcasts its 100,000-watt signal (WTEB 89.3) twenty-four hours a day from studios located on the campus of Craven Community College in New Bern, NC. Public Radio East is recognized as a full-service professional public radio station by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and is a member of National Public Radio and American Public Radio. Public Radio East is one of only nine 100,000 public radio stations in the country licensed to a community college.

Public Radio East is the radio source for in-depth news and information from National Public Radio, as well as fine arts programming for counties in eastern North Carolina. The Public Radio East staff includes nine full-time permanent employees and several part-time fine arts announcers. The Public Radio East Foundation Board of Directors is composed of fifteen individual listeners from the Public Radio East primary coverage area. The Board meets four times annually to advise and assist the Public Radio East development staff.

To enhance its service to eastern North Carolina, Public Radio East:

  • Added a 35,000 watt station in Wayne County in 1997 to repeat the Public Radio East broadcast - WKNS 90.3
  • Began broadcasting on a third station located in Atlantic Beach in May 1999 - WBJD 91.5
  • A translator located in Greenville provides that area with access to Public Radio East on 88.1
  • Broadcasts the eastern North Carolina Radio Reading Service (ENCRRS) on a sub carrier of the station's main channel. The ENCRRS is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide information services to sight-impaired residents of North Carolina.

Public Radio East's studio and offices are located in Barker Hall. The station welcomes visitors during business hours. Anyone interested in volunteering during the semi-annual fund drives is encouraged to call the station at 252-638-3434. Visit our web page at: http://www.publicradioeast.org/
