Developmental StudiesThis division offers five developmental writing and communication courses, five developmental math courses, and three remedial reading courses. In addition, this division teaches the orientation courses which are required in all programs leading to a diploma or degree. Students may choose between a one-quarter-hour and three-quarter-hour orientation course.
Approximately seventy-five percent (75%) of all students entering Craven take one or more developmental courses. Students are usually referred to this division based on their ASSET placement test. A course instructor may refer students, or students may seek these services independently as needed to meet the prerequisites of the college courses.
The Developmental Studies Division administers the Academic Skills Center (located in Building F), which contains the Writing Lab, Math Lab, and Computer Lab. In addition, the Academic Skills Center offers individual tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, and coordination of American Disabilities Act (ADA) services. A broad array of services for disadvantaged, learning disabled, or physically challenged students are offered through the Academic Skills Center.
